WARNING! Keep fingers away from needle area during setup and operation. Ensure machine is unplugged when not in use.

First-Time Operation

Plug in machine, turn handwheel toward you to raise needle to highest position.

  1. Wind bobbin: Follow threading diagram on machine; place bobbin on winder spindle.
  2. Insert bobbin: Open bobbin cover, drop bobbin in with thread unwinding counterclockwise.
  3. Thread upper thread: Follow numbered threading path from spool pin to needle.

Tip: Use shorter stitches (1.5-2) for delicate fabrics, longer stitches (3-4) for basting.

Threading and Bobbin Winding

Proper threading is essential for good stitch quality.

  1. Winding bobbin: Place thread on spool pin, guide through pre-tension, wrap around bobbin 3-4 times, push bobbin winder to right, press pedal.
  2. Inserting bobbin: Open bobbin cover, drop bobbin in with thread unwinding counterclockwise, pull thread through slot and under tension spring.
  3. Upper threading: Follow numbered path: spool pin, thread guide, tension discs, take-up lever, thread guides, needle (front to back).
  4. Drawing up bobbin thread: Hold upper thread, turn handwheel toward you until needle goes down and up, pull upper thread to bring up bobbin loop.

WARNING! Ensure presser foot is raised when threading upper thread to allow thread to seat properly in tension discs.

Basic Sewing Techniques

Master these fundamental techniques for successful sewing.

  1. Straight seam: Align fabric edges, lower presser foot, sew with consistent speed, use reverse lever to secure ends.
  2. Zigzag stitch: Use for finishing edges, appliqué, or stretch fabrics.
  3. Buttonhole: Attach buttonhole foot, select stitch 4, follow 4-step sequence marked on machine.
  4. Free arm sewing: Remove accessory storage box to access free arm for sleeves and cuffs.
  5. Changing presser feet: Raise needle to highest position, press lever on back of foot holder to release, snap new foot into place.

CAUTION! Always stop with needle in fabric when pivoting corners or adjusting fabric position.

Care & Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity.

  1. Unplug machine before any maintenance.
  2. Clean lint and dust: Remove needle plate screws, lift plate, use brush to clean feed dog and bobbin area.
  3. Oil sparingly: Use only Singer sewing machine oil on designated points (see diagram in manual).
  4. Change needle regularly: Dull or bent needles cause skipped stitches and fabric damage.
  5. Cover when not in use: Protect from dust and sunlight.

CAUTION! Do not use compressed air to clean machine as it can force lint deeper into mechanism.
