Unpacking and Setup

Carefully unpack the machine and inspect all parts. Place on a sturdy, level table.

  1. Remove all packing materials and protective covers.
  2. Attach the foot control pedal to the machine's motor cord.
  3. Plug the power cord into a grounded 120V AC outlet.
  4. Install the needle (flat side toward the back) and presser foot.
  5. Wind and insert the bobbin, then thread the upper thread.

WARNING! Keep fingers away from the needle and moving parts during operation. Always unplug the machine when not in use or when performing maintenance.

First-Time Operation

Before sewing on fabric, practice on scrap material.

  1. Power on: Plug in and turn handwheel toward you to check movement.
  2. Thread the machine: Follow the numbered threading path on the machine.
  3. Set stitch length: Adjust dial to a medium setting (2.5) for general sewing.
  4. Test sew: Place fabric under presser foot, lower foot, and gently press foot control.
  5. Practice reverse: Use reverse lever at the beginning and end of seams.

CAUTION! Do not force the handwheel. If it does not turn freely, check for thread jams or incorrect bobbin insertion.

Controls and Adjustments

Main controls are located on the right side of the machine body.

Stitch Length Regulator: Dial with numbers (0-4). Higher numbers = longer stitches. Set to 0 for darning.
Reverse Lever: Press and hold to sew backwards for reinforcement.
Tension Dial: Controls upper thread tension. Higher numbers = tighter tension. Normal setting is around 4.
Presser Foot Lifter: Raises and lowers the presser foot.
Feed Dog Drop Lever: Lowers feed dogs for darning or free-motion sewing.

Threading the Machine

Correct threading is essential for proper stitch formation.

  1. Raise the presser foot and needle to highest position.
  2. Place spool on spool pin. Follow the numbered guide:
    • Thread through first thread guide on top.
    • Down and around the tension discs.
    • Up through the take-up lever.
    • Down through the lower thread guides.
    • Finally, thread the needle from front to back.
  3. Pull about 4 inches of thread toward the back under the presser foot.

Tip: Always thread with the presser foot raised to allow the thread to seat properly in the tension discs.

Basic Sewing Techniques

Mastering these basics will ensure successful sewing projects.

  1. Starting a Seam: Position fabric, lower presser foot, hold thread tails, sew a few stitches forward, engage reverse for a few stitches, then sew forward.
  2. Straight Seams: Guide fabric gently, letting the feed dogs move it. Do not pull.
  3. Turning Corners: Stop with needle down in fabric, lift presser foot, pivot fabric, lower foot, continue sewing.
  4. Finishing: Reverse stitch at end, raise needle and presser foot, pull fabric to back and cut threads.
  5. Darning/Free-Motion: Drop feed dogs, lower or cover presser foot (or use darning foot), move fabric manually in any direction.

WARNING! Never sew over pins. Remove them as you approach to avoid needle breakage and injury.

Maintenance & Lubrication

Regular maintenance ensures long life and smooth operation.

  1. Unplug the machine before any maintenance.
  2. Clean lint and dust from bobbin area, feed dogs, and tension discs after each project using the small brush provided.
  3. Oil the machine periodically as indicated in the oiling diagram. Use only high-quality sewing machine oil.
  4. Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth.

CAUTION! Do not use household oils or aerosols. Over-oiling can attract lint and damage fabrics.

Needle and Bobbin Guide

Using the correct needle and bobbin is crucial.

Needles: Use Singer brand 15x1 needles. Replace needle after 8-10 hours of sewing or if bent/dull. Match needle type to fabric (e.g., Universal for wovens, Ballpoint for knits).
Bobbin: Use only Class 15 metal bobbins. Wind evenly. Insert with thread running counter-clockwise. Pull thread into the tension spring slot.
Thread: Use good quality all-purpose or polyester thread. Avoid old or brittle thread.
