  2. Power Connection: Plug the motor cord into a grounded 110V outlet. Ensure the foot control is connected to the motor.
  3. Belt Tension: Check the drive belt connecting the motor to the handwheel. It should have about 1/2 inch of play.
  4. Needle Installation: Insert a size 16 or 18 needle (System 15x1) with the flat side facing the back. Tighten the screw firmly.
  5. Oil: Lightly oil all points indicated in the lubrication diagram before first use.

WARNING! This machine is heavy. Use proper lifting techniques or get assistance to avoid injury. Keep fingers away from the needle and moving parts during operation.

Specifications

Controls and Functions

Access all controls from the right side and front of the machine.

Handwheel: Turn toward you to raise/lower the needle manually. Can be disengaged for bobbin winding.
Stitch Length Regulator: Dial on the right side. Higher numbers = longer stitches.
Reverse Stitch Lever: Push and hold to sew in reverse.
Presser Foot Pressure Dial: On top of the machine near the pillar. Increase pressure for thick fabrics, decrease for thin or delicate fabrics.
Tension Dial: On the front face. Higher numbers increase top thread tension.
Bobbin Winder: Located on top of the handwheel. Disengage handwheel to wind bobbin.
Light Switch: Usually integrated with the power cord or located near the motor.

Threading the Machine

Correct threading is essential for proper stitch formation.

  1. Top Thread:
    1. Place spool on the vertical spool pin.
    2. Follow the numbered threading guide on the machine: through the first thread guide, down the tension assembly, up and through the take-up lever, then down through the final guide(s) to the needle.
    3. Thread the needle from front to back.
  2. Bobbin (Bottom Thread):
    1. Wind a Class 66 metal bobbin evenly using the built-in winder.
    2. Insert bobbin into the shuttle with the thread running counter-clockwise.
    3. Pull the thread through the slot and under the tension spring.
  3. Bring Up Bobbin Thread: Hold the top thread tail. Turn the handwheel toward you one full rotation to lower and raise the needle. Pull the top thread to bring the bobbin loop up. Pull both thread tails under and behind the presser foot.

Tip: Always have the presser foot UP when threading the top tension discs.

Basic Sewing Operation

  1. Fabric Placement: Raise the presser foot. Place fabric under the foot, aligning the edge with your desired seam guide.
  2. Lower Presser Foot: Gently lower the presser foot lever.
  3. Start Sewing: Depress the foot control lightly to start slowly. Guide the fabric gently; do not push or pull.
  4. Reverse: Press and hold the reverse lever at the start and end of a seam for 2-3 stitches to lock stitches.
  5. Finishing: Stop sewing. Raise the needle to its highest position using the handwheel. Raise the presser foot. Pull the fabric to the rear and cut threads using the built-in thread cutter or scissors.

WARNING! Never sew over pins. Remove them as you approach them with the needle.

Maintenance & Lubrication

Regular maintenance ensures longevity and smooth operation.

Daily: Brush out lint from the bobbin area and feed dogs.
Weekly (or after 8 hours of use): Add 1-2 drops of high-quality sewing machine oil (Singer All-Purpose Machine Oil recommended) to all oiling points shown in the manual's diagram. Key points include: the take-up lever, needle bar, presser foot bar, and shuttle race.
Procedure:

  1. Unplug the machine.
  2. Remove the needle, presser foot, and throat plate.
  3. Apply oil sparingly to moving joints and bearings.
  4. Run the machine without thread for a minute to distribute oil.
  5. Wipe away any excess oil with a soft cloth.

CAUTION! Use only sewing machine oil. Do not use household oils or WD-40. Over-oiling can attract lint and stain fabric.

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Thread bunching underneath (bird's nest)Incorrect top threading; bobbin not inserted correctlyRe-thread top, ensuring thread is seated in tension discs. Re-insert bobbin, ensuring thread runs in correct direction.
Skipped stitchesBent/dull needle; wrong needle for fabric; incorrect threadingReplace needle. Ensure needle is inserted fully with flat side back. Re-thread.
Thread breakingBurr on needle or throat plate; tension too tight; poor quality threadReplace needle. Inspect throat plate for scratches. Reduce tension slightly. Use good quality thread.

Uneven feed (fabric not moving)Presser foot pressure too light; feed dogs lowered or cloggedIncrease presser foot pressure. Clean lint from feed dogs. Ensure feed dog lever is in "up" position.
Needle breaksFabric pulled; bent needle; needle hitting presser foot or bobbin caseLet machine feed fabric. Replace needle. Ensure needle is straight and correctly installed. Ensure correct foot is attached.
