Unpacking and Setup

Unpack carefully and inspect all parts. Place on a sturdy table or cabinet.

  1. Position the machine: Ensure it is stable and level on your work surface.
  2. Attach the belt: Connect the motor belt to the handwheel if using an electric motor.
  3. Install the needle: Loosen needle clamp screw, insert needle with flat side to the back, tighten screw.
  4. Plug in power: Connect the motor plug to a standard 120V outlet. For treadle/hand-crank models, skip this step.

WARNING! Machine is heavy; lift with care using your legs. Ensure the power is off during setup.

First-Time Operation

Before sewing your first stitch, complete these steps.

  1. Wind the bobbin: Place thread spool on spool pin, guide thread through bobbin winder tension, and wind bobbin evenly.
  2. Insert the bobbin: Drop bobbin into the front-loading bobbin case with thread running counter-clockwise.
  3. Thread the upper thread: Follow the numbered threading path on the machine from spool to needle.
  4. Set stitch length: Turn the stitch length dial to a medium setting (e.g., 2.5) for general sewing.
  5. Test on scrap fabric: Lower the presser foot and turn the handwheel toward you to take a few stitches.

CAUTION! Always turn the handwheel toward you (counter-clockwise) to avoid timing issues. Keep fingers away from the needle.

Controls and Adjustments

Main controls are located on the right side of the machine.

Stitch Length Regulator: Dial numbered 0 to 4 (or 0 to 30 stitches per inch). Higher number = longer stitch.

Tension Dial: Located on the face. Higher number = tighter tension. Correct tension shows balanced stitches (threads locked in middle of fabric).

Reverse Lever: Push to the left to sew in reverse for back-tacking.

Presser Foot Lever: Raises and lowers the presser foot.

Handwheel: Turn counter-clockwise only to manually advance the needle.

Bobbin Winder: Located on top right. Disengages the needle mechanism when winding a bobbin.

Threading the Machine

Correct threading is essential for proper operation.

  1. Upper Thread:
    1. Place thread spool on spool pin.
    2. Pull thread through the first thread guide on top.
    3. Draw thread down and through the tension discs (between the tension dial plates).
    4. Pull thread up and through the take-up lever eye.
    5. Guide thread down through the lower thread guides.
    6. Thread the needle from front to back.
  2. Bobbin Thread:
    1. Wind bobbin evenly using the bobbin winder.
    2. Insert bobbin into bobbin case, pulling thread through the slot and under the tension spring.
    3. Hold the end of the upper thread. Turn the handwheel toward you until the needle goes down and up, catching the bobbin thread in a loop.
    4. Pull the loop up to bring the bobbin thread tail through the needle plate.

Tip: Always have both thread tails under the presser foot and toward the back before starting to sew.

Stitch Selection and Use

The Model 15 sews a straight stitch only. Adjust for different fabrics.

  1. Stitch Length: Use shorter stitches (1.5-2) for fine fabrics, longer stitches (3-4) for basting or heavy fabrics.
  2. Tension Adjustment: Test on a fabric scrap. If top thread loops on bottom, decrease top tension. If bobbin thread loops on top, increase top tension.
  3. Reverse Stitching: Hold the reverse lever to the left at the beginning and end of a seam to lock stitches.
  4. Seam Guides: Use the lines on the needle plate as guides for seam allowances.

WARNING! Do not force or pull the fabric while sewing; let the feed dogs move it. Always use the correct needle size for your fabric.

Maintenance & Oiling

Regular oiling is crucial for smooth operation and longevity.

  1. Frequency: Oil after every 8 hours of use.
  2. Oil Type: Use only high-quality sewing machine oil.
  3. Points to Oil: Apply one drop to each moving joint, the needle bar, presser foot bar, take-up lever, and bobbin hook race.
  4. Cleaning: Remove lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs with a small brush after each project.

CAUTION! Unplug the machine before oiling. Wipe away any excess oil to prevent staining fabric. Never use household oils.
