Unpacking and Setup

Unpack the machine and inspect all components. Place on a sturdy, level table.

  1. Remove all packing materials and protective covers.
  2. Attach the foot control pedal to the machine's motor cord.
  3. Plug the power cord into a standard 120V AC outlet.
  4. Install the needle: Loosen needle clamp screw, insert needle with flat side to the back, tighten screw.
  5. Place the empty bobbin in the bobbin winder and thread for winding.

WARNING! Ensure the machine is unplugged during setup. The machine is heavy; lift with care using both hands.

First-Time Operation

Before sewing your first stitch, complete these steps.

  1. Wind the bobbin: Place thread on spool pin, guide through tension disc, wind bobbin evenly.
  2. Insert the bobbin: Drop bobbin into case with thread unwinding counter-clockwise.
  3. Thread the upper thread: Follow numbered guides from spool to needle.
  4. Raise the presser foot and pull bobbin thread up through needle plate.
  5. Select a medium stitch length (2.5) and test sew on scrap fabric.

CAUTION! Keep fingers away from the needle while the machine is running. Always start with the presser foot down.

Controls and Adjustments

Main controls are located on the right side of the machine.

Stitch Length Regulator: Dial marked 0-4. Higher numbers = longer stitches.
Reverse Stitch Lever: Hold down to sew backwards for securing seams.
Tension Dial: Adjusts upper thread tension. Higher numbers = tighter tension.
Presser Foot Lifter: Raises and lowers the presser foot.
Drop Feed Lever: Lowers feed dogs for darning or free-motion work.
Bobbin Winder: Spindle and friction disc for winding bobbins.
Foot Control: Press to start sewing; pressure controls speed.

Threading the Machine

Correct threading is essential for proper stitch formation.

  1. Upper Threading: Follow the numbered path on the machine: Spool Pin > Thread Guide > Tension Disc > Take-up Lever > Thread Guide > Needle (front to back).
  2. Bobbin Insertion: Place wound bobbin in case so thread unwinds counter-clockwise. Pull thread through slot and under tension spring. Insert case into machine until it clicks.
  3. Drawing Up Bobbin Thread: Hold upper thread tail. Turn handwheel toward you until needle goes down and up. Pull upper thread to bring bobbin loop up. Pull both threads under presser foot toward the back.

Tip: Always thread with the presser foot raised to open the tension discs.

Stitch Selection & Techniques

The 301 sews a perfect straight stitch. Adjust for different fabrics.

  1. Stitch Length: Use shorter stitches (1.5-2) for fine fabrics, longer (3-4) for basting or heavy fabrics.
  2. Seam Starting: Hold thread tails, sew a few stitches forward, engage reverse for 2-3 stitches, then sew forward.
  3. Pivoting: Stop with needle down in fabric, lift presser foot, turn fabric, lower foot, continue sewing.
  4. Free-Motion Sewing: Lower feed dogs using drop feed lever. Use a darning foot and manually move fabric.
  5. Gathering: Set long stitch length (4), sew two parallel rows, pull bobbin threads to gather.

WARNING! Do not force or pull fabric while sewing. Let the feed dogs move it.

Maintenance & Lubrication

Regular maintenance ensures long life and smooth operation.

  1. Unplug the machine before any maintenance.
  2. Clean lint and dust from bobbin area, feed dogs, and tension discs after each project using the provided brush.
  3. Oil the machine regularly with Singer sewing machine oil. Apply one drop at each oiling point marked in the manual (e.g., needle bar, hook race).
  4. Wipe off excess oil and run the machine on scrap fabric to distribute oil.
  5. Store the machine covered when not in use.

CAUTION! Use only sewing machine oil. Do not use household oils. Never spray cleaners directly onto the machine.
