Safety Precautions

Before performing any service, disconnect the machine from the electrical outlet. Always wear safety glasses. Use proper tools.

  1. Electrical Safety: Unplug the machine before opening any covers or performing internal service.
  2. Mechanical Safety: Keep hands clear of moving parts, especially the needle and hook area, even when unplugged.
  3. Component Handling: Place removed screws and small parts in a container to prevent loss. Note the order of disassembly.
  4. Work Area: Ensure a clean, well-lit, and stable work surface.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety procedures may result in electric shock, injury, or damage to the machine.

Tools & Lubricants

Required for service:

Note: Use only high-quality sewing machine oil. Do not use household oils or WD-40.

External Parts Identification

Front/Rear View: Handwheel, Stitch Selector Dial, Stitch Length/Width Controls, Tension Dial, Presser Foot Lever, Bobbin Winder, Free Arm.

Top Cover (Removed): Shows connection points for stitch selector, tension assembly, and light wiring.

Bottom Cover (Removed): Reveals motor, belt, main shaft, hook drive, and gear assembly.

Internal Mechanism

The machine uses a vertical oscillating hook system. Power is transmitted from the motor via a drive belt to the main shaft, which converts rotary motion into the up/down movement of the needle bar and the oscillating motion of the hook.

  1. Main Shaft: Drives the needle bar crank and the hook drive mechanism.
  2. Needle Bar Assembly: Includes needle clamp, bar, and connecting link.
  3. Hook Assembly: Includes oscillating hook, bobbin case, and shuttle race.
  4. Feed Dog Mechanism: Lifted by a cam on the lower shaft for fabric advance.
  5. Stitch Width & Length Cams: Controlled by user dials to modify stitch pattern.

Disassembly Procedure

General sequence for accessing internal components.

  1. Unplug machine. Remove needle, presser foot, and bobbin case.
  2. Remove top cover screws (usually at rear and sides). Lift cover off carefully, noting any wire connections to the light or dials.
  3. Remove bottom cover screws. Set cover aside.
  4. To access hook area: Remove the needle plate screws and lift the needle plate.
  5. To remove hook assembly: Rotate handwheel to raise needle bar to highest position. Remove the hook retaining ring or screw. Carefully slide the hook out.
  6. CAUTION: Label or photograph wire connections before disconnecting. Do not force components.

Timing Adjustments

Correct needle-to-hook timing is critical for stitch formation.

Checking Timing: 1. Remove needle plate and presser foot. 2. Rotate handwheel toward you until needle bar descends to its lowest point and begins to rise. 3. At the point where the needle has risen approximately 2.0-2.5mm, the tip of the hook should meet the needle at the center of the scarf (the indentation above the eye).

Adjusting Timing: 1. Loosen the set screw on the handwheel or the gear coupling on the main shaft. 2. Rotate the handwheel or shaft slightly to advance or retard the hook's meeting point with the needle. 3. Tighten the set screw and re-check timing.

Tension System Service

Upper tension assembly disassembly and cleaning.

  1. Remove the tension dial by pulling it straight off its post (may have a retaining screw).
  2. Note the order of discs and springs. Clean all discs with a lint-free cloth.
  3. Check the tension spring for proper tension. It should provide consistent pressure.
  4. Reassemble in reverse order. Correct upper tension is achieved when the bobbin thread is pulled to the middle of the fabric layers.
  5. Bobbin Case Tension: Adjust the small screw on the side of the bobbin case. Turn slightly clockwise to increase, counter-clockwise to decrease tension.

Hook & Bobbin Case Assembly

Service of the lower thread mechanism.

  1. Cleaning: Remove lint and thread fragments from the hook race and bobbin case using a brush.
  2. Inspection: Check the hook point for burrs or damage. A damaged hook will cause skipped stitches or thread breakage. Polish minor burrs with a fine emery board.
  3. Lubrication: Apply one drop of oil to the hook raceway and the points where the hook rotates on its shaft.
  4. Reassembly: Ensure the hook is fully seated and the retaining mechanism is secure. The bobbin case should click firmly into place.

Electrical System

Basic electrical checks.

ComponentCheckSpecification
Power CordContinuityNo breaks. Replace if damaged.
Foot ControlVariable ResistanceResistance should change smoothly with pedal pressure.
MotorContinuity & BrushesCheck windings for continuity. Inspect carbon brushes for wear (replace if less than 1/4").
Light BulbContinuityReplace if filament is broken. Usually 15W, 120V.
Switch (if applicable)FunctionShould make/break circuit cleanly.

WARNING! All electrical checks must be performed with the machine UNPLUGGED.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Machine does not runNo power, faulty foot control, motor issueCheck outlet, cord, foot control. Test motor brushes and windings.
Skipped stitchesWrong needle, bent needle, incorrect timing, burred hookReplace needle. Check and adjust timing. Inspect and polish hook.
Thread breakingIncorrect threading, damaged thread path, excessive tensionRethread top and bottom. Check for burrs on needle plate, hook, or tension discs. Reduce tension.
Uneven feed (bird nesting)Incorrect bobbin insertion, dirty bobbin area, upper tension too looseRe-insert bobbin ensuring correct direction. Clean hook area. Increase upper tension.
Noisy operationLack of lubrication, loose parts, worn gears or bearingsOil machine per manual. Tighten screws. Inspect gears for wear.
Stitch pattern incorrectStitch width/length mechanism jammed, damaged selector camClean and lubricate mechanism. Inspect plastic selector cam for broken teeth.
