Unpacking and Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable table.

  1. Remove machine from box: Lift by carrying handle; avoid lifting by free arm.
  2. Attach foot pedal: Plug cord into pedal jack on right side of machine.
  3. Plug in power: Connect power cord to machine and wall outlet (110-120V).
  4. Install light bulb: If not pre-installed, screw bulb into socket under cover.
  5. Attach accessory tray: Slide onto free arm if included.

WARNING! Machine is heavy; lift with both hands. Ensure table is stable to prevent tipping.

First-Time Operation

Power on machine; light should illuminate.

  1. Wind bobbin: Place thread on spool pin, guide through bobbin winder, press winder to engage.
  2. Insert bobbin: Drop bobbin into case under needle plate, pull thread through slot.
  3. Thread upper thread: Follow numbered guides from spool to needle.
  4. Select stitch: Turn dial to straight stitch (position 1) for practice.
  5. Test sew: Place fabric under presser foot, lower foot, gently press pedal.

CAUTION! Keep fingers away from needle when machine is running. Always turn handwheel toward you.

Threading and Bobbin

  3. Pull thread down, up, and through take-up lever.
  4. Thread needle from front to back.
  5. Pull bobbin thread up through needle plate by turning handwheel.

Tip: Use quality thread; poor thread causes jams and skipped stitches.

Basic Sewing Techniques

Supports straight stitch, zigzag, buttonholes, blind hem.

  1. Straight stitch: Set dial to 1, length 2.5 mm for medium fabric.
  2. Zigzag: Set dial to 2, adjust width for finishing edges.
  3. Buttonhole: Use 4-step process (right zigzag, left zigzag, etc.).
  4. Blind hem: Set dial to 3, fold fabric as directed.
  5. Darning: Drop feed dogs, use darning foot.
  6. Reverse: Hold lever to secure beginning/end of seam.

WARNING! Do not pull fabric; let feed dogs move it. Change needle regularly.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Unplug before maintenance. Clean lint from bobbin area and feed dogs with brush. Oil as per manual (sparingly).

CAUTION! Do not use compressed air; it blows lint into mechanism. Use only Singer-approved oil.
