WARNING! Machine is heavy; lift with care using legs, not back. Ensure it is stable before operation.

First-Time Operation

Before sewing your first stitch, complete these steps.

  1. Thread the machine: Follow threading diagram (see Section 6).
  2. Insert bobbin: Place bobbin in case, pull thread through slot and under tension spring.
  3. Bring up bobbin thread: Hold needle thread, turn handwheel toward you to lower and raise needle, pulling bobbin loop up.
  4. Adjust tension: Test on scrap fabric; adjust dial for balanced stitch.
  5. Practice: Sew on scrap fabric to get feel of speed and control.

CAUTION! Keep fingers away from needle while machine is in motion. Always turn handwheel toward you.

Controls and Adjustments

Main controls are located on the right side of the machine.

Stitch Length Lever: Slide to set stitch length (higher number = longer stitch). Tension Dial: Turn clockwise to increase upper thread tension. Reverse Lever: Hold down to sew in reverse for back-tacking. Presser Foot Lifter: Raises and lowers presser foot. Bobbin Winder: Located on top right; disengages needle when winding bobbin.

Adjustments: Needle position (centered), feed dog height (drop for darning), presser foot pressure (screw on top).

Threading the Machine

Correct threading is essential for proper stitch formation.

  1. Raise presser foot and needle to highest position.
  2. Place spool on spool pin.
  3. Follow numbered guides: Through first thread guide, down around tension discs, up through take-up lever, down through lower guides.
  4. Thread needle from front to back.
  5. For bobbin: Wind bobbin evenly, insert into bobbin case with thread coming off counter-clockwise, pull through tension spring.

Tip: Ensure thread is securely between tension discs. Re-thread completely if experiencing issues.

Stitch Selection and Use

The Singer 15 sews a straight stitch only.

  1. Set stitch length: 2-2.5mm for general sewing, shorter for fine fabrics, longer for basting.
  2. Start sewing: Lower presser foot, begin turning handwheel or press motor pedal gently.
  3. 3. Guiding fabric: Guide fabric gently; do not push or pull.
  4. Finishing: Use reverse lever for 2-3 stitches to lock seam.
  5. Cut threads: Use thread cutter on faceplate or scissors.

WARNING! Do not sew over pins. Remove pins before they reach the needle.

Maintenance & Oiling

Regular oiling keeps the machine running smoothly.

Use only high-quality sewing machine oil. Unplug motor if electric. Apply 1-2 drops to each oiling point indicated in diagram (e.g., needle bar, presser foot bar, hook race). Wipe away excess oil. Run machine on scrap fabric to distribute oil. Clean lint from bobbin area and feed dogs after each project.

CAUTION! Do not over-oil. Keep oil away from belts and motor. Store in a dry place.
